Georgetown Cupcake, founded by sisters Katherine Berman and Sophie LaMontagne in February 2008, has become a hallmark of the cupcakery scene in Washington, D.C. Drawing inspiration from their Greek grandmother, who instilled in them a passion for baking, the sisters transitioned from corporate careers to entrepreneurship during the Great Recession. With their life savings and a small business loan, they opened their first shop in a quaint house on Potomac Street, quickly gaining popularity and often selling out of cupcakes each day.
As demand surged, Georgetown Cupcake expanded its operations, relocating to a larger venue at the corner of 33rd and M Street NW by December 2009. The sisters have since opened additional locations in Bethesda, Maryland, Soho, New York, Newbury St. in Boston, and Los Angeles, with plans for further expansion. Their innovative approach includes nationwide shipping, allowing customers across the country to enjoy their delectable cupcakes, which are made with high-quality ingredients sourced from around the world.
The success of Georgetown Cupcake was further amplified by the TLC reality series “DC Cupcakes,” which aired in 2010 and showcased the sisters’ journey in running their business. This exposure not only solidified their brand but also led to the opening of multiple new locations and increased their visibility in the culinary world. They have made guest appearances on popular shows like the Martha Stewart Show and NBC’s Today Show, further establishing their reputation as leading figures in the baking industry.
Today, Georgetown Cupcake offers over thirty flavors daily, with red velvet being the top-seller. The sisters continue to innovate and adapt to changing market demands, ensuring their business remains relevant and successful. Their story serves as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs, demonstrating that with passion, hard work, and a willingness to embrace uncertainty, dreams can indeed become a thriving reality.
