Few British pop duos can claim the same success as Andy Bell and Vince Clarke. Better known as Erasure, the group formed in the mid-80s, enjoying consecutive Top 40 hits throughout the 80s, 90s and into the 00s before winning Brit Award for Best British Pop Group. The band are one of the most successful British acts of all time, with five consecutive No. 1 albums in the UK and over 25 million records sold worldwide. The band also enjoyed a UK No 1 single with their cover of ABBA’s ‘Take a Chance on Me’ taken from their EP ‘Abba-esque’. Consisting entirely of ABBA covers, the record contributed to a revival in the Swedish pop band’s back catalogue.
Part of Erasure’s broad appeal and longevity has been dueto the fact that, behind the chic synth-driven arrangements and outlandishmusic videos were perfectly crafted pop songs by two exceptionally talentedsongwriters. Erasure’s catchy, radio-ready songs are instantly recognisable, and their emotional but uplifting lyrics have universal appeal and boundlesssing-along potential. Media producers and advertisers continue to licenceanthems such as ‘A Little Respect’, ‘Sometimes’ and ‘Always’ to this day, andacts such as The Strokes, Wheatus and KT Tunstall frequently perform covers of Erasure’ssongs at concerts and festivals, cementing the band’s music as a mainstay ofcontemporary popular culture. Moreover, Erasure’s songs remain on the playlistsof both mainstream radio and music video stations and their timeless compositionsare regarded as an integral part of the 20th and 21stcentury popular music canon, alongside Queen, The Beatles and Bob Dylan.
