Benny the Butcher was born Jeremie Pennick but started his rap career under the pseudonym B.E.N.N.Y back in the 2000s, releasing many underground mixtapes. In 2014, his cousin Westside Gunn launched Griselda Records, and they and their cousin Conway the Machine began releasing their mixtapes through it. A break came in 2017 when the Griselda collective signed with Eminem’s Shady label and Benny’s other collective, the Black Soprano Family, signed with Entertainment One Music.
As Benny the Butcher, he released his debut solo album, Tana Talk 3, in November 2018. The cover art reflects some of the tragedy in his life as it features a portrait of his late older brother, fellow rapper Machine Gun Black. Griselda also released an album, WWCD, which became one of the top-ten hip-hop albums of 2019. Benny topped that with 2020’s Burden of Proof, which made the upper reaches of charts in both America (including the Billboard 200) and the United Kingdom. 2022’s Tana Talk 4 achieved similar success.
