Wave To Earth, a South Korean indie rock band formed in Seoul in 2019, consists of vocalist and guitarist Kim Daniel, bassist Cha Soonjong, and drummer Shin Donggyu. The band’s formation involved Kim Daniel and Shin Donggyu, who began playing music together in middle school. Their stated ambition was “to make music that creates a new wave.” They officially debuted on August 23, 2019, with the single “Wave,” marking the addition of Cha Soonjong to the lineup. In addition to the core trio, session members include Jo Jung-geun (keyboard), Jeon-min (saxophone), and Hong Seung-gi (artwork). The band is known for its distinct sound that integrates soft indie rock with jazz influences, which has contributed to an international fan base through streaming platforms.
The group released two EPs in 2020: “Wave 0.01” and “Summer Flows 0.02.” In 2021, Wave To Earth signed with Wavy, an independent label owned by R&B artist Colde, which further integrated them into Korea’s alternative music ecosystem. Their music, predominantly sung in English, has allowed them to reach global audiences, with songs like “bad,” “daisy,” and “nouvelle vague” accumulating millions of streams. The band’s approach prioritizes emotional accessibility and atmospheric charm, utilizing sparse structures and maximized emotion to convey themes of love and longing. They gained significant international attention with their 2023 debut album, “0.1 Flaws and All,” and have since made notable festival appearances across Asia.
Wave To Earth embarked on a sold-out North American tour in September 2023, further expanding their global reach. In 2024, they released their latest studio album, “Play with Earth! 0.03.” The band’s career progression demonstrates a steady growth from local indie roots to international recognition. Their sustained success is attributed to their commitment to a distinct artistic identity, blending genres and storytelling with a focus on subtlety rather than spectacle. This commitment has positioned them as significant figures in the South Korean indie-rock community.
