Anna Akana launched her comedy career, transitioning to YouTube in 2011 where her channel quickly became a platform for both comedy sketches and documentary-style content, leading to her recognition by New Media Rockstars as one of the top 100 YouTube channels in 2014. Her early digital work also included an appearance in Katy Perry’s highly viewed ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’ music video in 2011. Expanding her creative endeavors, Akana authored the book Surviving Suicide in 2013, followed by So Much I Want to Tell You: Letters to My Little Sister in 2017. Her digital productions extended to short films, with Miss Earth (2014) notably receiving partial funding from Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s New Form Digital.
Akana has also established a robust presence in television and voice acting. She held roles in series such as Awkward (2011) and Corporate (2018-2020), and has lent her voice to recurring characters, including Gloria Sato in Disney Channel’s Big City Greens (2018-present) and Sasha Waybright in Amphibia (2019-2022). In 2019, Akana expanded her artistic reach into music, releasing her debut single ‘Intervention,’ which preceded her full-length album Casualty. This was followed by the EP No Longer Yours in 2021.
Maintaining her versatility, Akana continued her film work with roles in Jupiter’s Legacy (2019), About Fate (2021), and Blade of the 47 Ronin (2022). She also launched her clothing line, ‘Ghost & Stars,’ in 2015, showcasing her entrepreneurial spirit. Most recently, Akana embarked on her stand-up comedy tour, ‘It Gets Darker,’ in 2024, sharing personal stories from her life and career to sold-out audiences. She continues her recurring voice role in Disney Channel’s Big City Greens, further solidifying her diverse appeal across multiple entertainment verticals.
