About

Bryan Lee Cranston was born on March 7, 1956, in Hollywood, California. His mother, Audrey Peggy Sell, was a radio actress, and his father, Joe Cranston, was an actor and former amateur boxer. Raised in Canoga Park, Los Angeles, and spending time on his grandparents’ poultry farm in Yucaipa, California, Cranston’s early life saw his father leave the family when Bryan was eleven. He later reconnected with his father as an adult. After graduating from Canoga Park High School, where he was part of the chemistry club, Cranston earned an associate degree in police science from Los Angeles Valley College in 1976. An elective acting class at college sparked his interest in a performing career. Prior to his acting breakthrough, Cranston worked various jobs, including as an ordained minister for the Universal Life Church, performing weddings for $150 a service, a waiter, a night-shift security guard, a truck loader, a camera operator for a video dating service, and a CCTV security guard at a supermarket. He began consistently working in the late 1980s, primarily in minor roles and advertisements.

Cranston gained significant recognition with his role as Hal in the Fox sitcom “Malcolm in the Middle” (2000–2006). This role showcased his comedic talent and earned him three Primetime Emmy Award nominations. He also directed several episodes of the series. The defining role of his career came as Walter White in the AMC crime drama “Breaking Bad” (2008–2013). His portrayal of a high school chemistry teacher turned methamphetamine producer garnered widespread critical acclaim, earning him four Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (2008, 2009, 2010, and 2014). Cranston also served as a producer for the fourth and fifth seasons of “Breaking Bad,” contributing to the show’s two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Drama Series during his tenure as producer.

Beyond television, Cranston achieved considerable success on stage and in film. He won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his performance as President Lyndon B. Johnson in “All the Way” on Broadway in 2014, a role he reprised in the 2016 HBO film adaptation. His portrayal of screenwriter Dalton Trumbo in the biographical drama “Trumbo” (2015) earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Further demonstrating his range, Cranston received a Laurence Olivier Award and his second Tony Award for his role as Howard Beale in the play “Network.” His filmography includes appearances in acclaimed movies such as “Saving Private Ryan” (1998), “Little Miss Sunshine” (2006), “Drive” (2011), “Argo” (2012), “Godzilla” (2014), and “The Upside” (2017). He has also lent his voice to animated features like “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” (2012), “Kung Fu Panda 3” (2016), and “Kung Fu Panda 4” (2024), and appeared in commercials for brands like Ford.
