Fabio Fognini

Fabio Fognini, a formidable presence on the ATP Tour, achieved a significant milestone by winning the 2015 Australian Open doubles championship alongside fellow Italian Simone Bolelli, marking the first time an all-Italian men’s pair claimed a Grand Slam title in the Open Era. Fognini turned professional in 2004, securing his first Futures title in 2005 and entering the ATP top 100 rankings by 2007. His singles career began to gain significant traction with his first ATP tour final appearance in Bucharest in 2012. He went on to clinch his first ATP singles title at the 2013 MercedesCup, an achievement that propelled him into the ATP top 20 rankings the same year.

Throughout his career, Fognini also showcased his prowess in Grand Slam events, reaching the quarterfinals of the French Open in 2011 and making multiple fourth-round appearances at the Australian Open in 2014, 2018, 2020, and 2021. He also proudly represented his country in the Olympic Games in 2012, 2016, and 2020. His extensive career on the professional circuit saw Fognini accumulate an impressive record of 426 singles wins and 224 doubles wins, earning over $19 million in prize money. In 2022, he set a record for Italian male players by becoming the first Italian man in the Open Era to achieve 400 tour-level wins.

Fognini’s distinctive playing style, characterized by flair, speed, and exceptional movement on the court, particularly his effective use of his off-forehand and backhand down the line, made him a captivating competitor. After a career spanning over two decades, Fognini announced his retirement from professional tennis on July 9, 2025. This decision followed his 18th appearance at the Italian Open and a memorable five-set match against Carlos Alcaraz at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, culminating a storied career that firmly secured his place in Italian tennis history.
