About

Melora Diane Hardin Jackson was born on June 29, 1967, in Houston, Texas, to acting manager and retired actress Diane Hardin and actor Jerry Hardin. She relocated to San Francisco, California, at age five and later attended middle and high school in the San Fernando Valley. Hardin began her acting career early, starring in the television series “Thunder” (1977–1978). Her early career included numerous television appearances, such as “The Love Boat” (1978), “Quincy, M.E.” (1979, 1982), and “Little House on the Prairie” (1981). Hardin also appeared in the 1983 television movie “Little House: Look Back to Yesterday” and the 1986 film “Soul Man.” She was initially cast as Jennifer Parker in “Back to the Future” (1985) but was later replaced due to a height difference with the new lead actor.

Throughout the 1990s, Hardin sustained a steady presence in television and film. She co-starred in the 1990 dance movie “Lambada” and had notable roles in “Quantum Leap” (1992) and “Absolute Power” (1997). A significant turning point in her career was her role as Ross Geller’s love interest, Celia, in “Friends” (1995), which showcased her versatility. Entering the 2000s, Hardin took on more prominent roles, including the series “Cover Me: Based on the True Life of an FBI Family” (2000–2001) and the recurring role of Trudy Monk in the USA Network series “Monk” (2004–2009).

Hardin achieved widespread recognition for her role as Jan Levinson, a corporate manager, in NBC’s “The Office” (2005–2013). This period also saw her in films such as “Thank You for Smoking” (2006), “27 Dresses” (2008), “17 Again” (2009), and “Hannah Montana: The Movie” (2009). She made her Broadway debut as Roxie Hart in “Chicago: The Musical” in 2008. From 2014 to 2019, she played Tammy Cashman in Amazon Prime Video’s “Transparent,” earning a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. She held a main role as Jacqueline Carlyle in “The Bold Type” (2017–2021) and competed on “Dancing with the Stars” in 2021, finishing sixth. Her recent work includes “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie” (2023) and the Broadway play “McNeal” (2024), where she originated the role of Francine Blake.
