Pelé is the world’s most iconic Soccerer and has been for decades. The diminutive Brazilian forward is often cited as the most talented player to ever play the game and has become a national treasure who is wholly synonymous with the game around the world. In his career he played with sides like Santos, where he scored a first goal before the age of 16 in the professional ranks, and then went on to make his mark on the world game. It was in 1958 when he played in the World Cup in Sweden that his talents were first on the world stage. He was speedy, athletic and had great vision from the off and scored a hat trick in the semi-final, followed by two more goals in the final to help his side eventually lift the cup. All in all he played 91 times for Brazil, scoring 77 goals and more than 650 in all of his domestic games for Santos and New York Cosmos. He won the World Cup again in 1970 and 1974, and after retiring from the game he has remained just as popular. He was given the International Peace Award for his work with UNICEF in 1978 and has served for his country as Extraordinary Minister for Sport and a United Nations ambassador for ecology and the environment alongside many other permits. ‘Co-player of the Century’ according to FIFA in 1999, he is one of the most celebrated sporting stars the world has ever seen.
