Record-breaker Shaun White is a triple Olympic gold medallist snowboarder who has also won an astounding 23 medals, including 15 gold, at the XGames and Winter X Games. Unsurprisingly, both of these hauls are world records. He has also won 10 ESPY Awards and a range of other accolades, including Revolver magazine’s Most Metal Athlete Award and Transworld Snowboarding’s Rider of the Year (twice). His success has seen him star in a variety of computer games, including Shaun White Snowboarding, World Stage, and Shaun White Skateboarding.
White hails from San Diego in California and spent his formative years practising snowboarding in the mountains of Southern Cali and Vermont. Also a keen skateboarder, his path to the big time began when, aged just nine, he met and made friends with skateboarding icon Tony Hawks who mentored him and was instrumental in White becoming a pro skateboarder at 17. He went on to win numerous titles and medals in the sport, including one from the Summer X Games.
However, it’s snowboarding that has been White’s route to world domination. A sponsored pro since the tender age of seven, he first represented the United States at the 2006 Winter Olympics, taking the first of his three golds (to date) in the halfpipe competition. He won gold in the same event in 2010 and 2018. His X Games medal haul is the stuff of legend, and it makes him not only the most decorated snowboarder of all-time, it also makes him the only athlete to have won gold at the Summer and Winter X Games in two different sports. Athletes simply don’t come more accomplished.
