Virginia Wade is a now retired former professional tennis player who saw great success on the court during her playing days. The British sportswomen won an impressive three Grand Slam titles in the singles format of the championships of the world and also picked up four Grand Slam doubles titles. Virginia holds the fine record of being the only woman in British tennis playing history to have won all four of the major Grand Slams; the US Open, Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon. At the peak of her career, Virginia was ranked at number 2 in the world in singles and at number 1 in the world in doubles.
It was in 1997 that Virginia won the singles final at Wimbledon during the famous competition’s centenary year. She was the last British player to win a Grand Slam right up until Andy Murray picked up the US Open title in 2012. She is the most recent woman to have won a Grand Slam title and as such is still a very much revered and talked about tennis star. After retiring from the game, Virginia went on put her great skills to good use as a coach and has also worked as a pundit, commentator and presenter for both the BBC and Eurosport during their coverage of tennis championships.
