William Robert Young was born on January 20, 1979, in Wokingham, Berkshire. He studied politics at the University of Exeter before pursuing musical theatre at the Arts Educational Schools in London. His career took a decisive turn in late 2001 when he became a contestant on Pop Idol. In February 2002, Young won the competition, becoming the first winner of the worldwide Idol franchise. His double A-sided debut single, “Anything Is Possible” / “Evergreen,” released shortly after his victory, became the fastest-selling debut single in UK history, selling over 1.1 million copies in its first week. This initial success established him as a significant figure in British music.
Following his Pop Idol win, Young released his debut album, “From Now On,” in 2002, which reached number one on the charts. This was followed by “Friday’s Child” (2003), which achieved five-times platinum status in the UK and produced three top-five singles. Subsequent albums like “Keep On” (2005), “Let It Go” (2008), and “Echoes” (2011) also achieved multi-platinum sales. His fourth UK number-one album, “85% Proof,” was released in 2015. Over his career, Young has received two Brit Awards from 12 nominations and has sold over eight million albums worldwide, securing his place in pop music.
Beyond music, Young has expanded his career into acting. He appeared in the 2005 film “Mrs Henderson Presents” alongside Judi Dench and later performed on stage in the 2012 London revival of “Cabaret,” for which he received a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical. He has also featured in television series such as “Marple” and “Skins.” In more recent years, Young continued to release music, with albums like “Lexicon” (2019), “Crying on the Bathroom Floor” (2021), and “Light It Up” (2024), demonstrating his ongoing presence and versatility in the entertainment industry. He also participated in “The Masked Singer” in 2022 and presented a Channel 4 documentary about his late twin brother, Rupert, in May 2022.
