The incredible entertainer Dong Young-bae is better known by his stage names Taeyang, and SOL (when he performs in Japan). He is a singer, songwriter, and dancer, who made his debut in 2006 as a member of the South Korean boy band Big Bang, who went on to become one of the best-selling digital groups of all-time in Asia and one of the best-selling boy bands in the world.
Born and raised in South Korea, Dong Young-bae started playing the piano as a child, and later on began working in music videos where he met and auditioned for the CEO of YG Entertainment. He was accepted as a trainee, and after a few years he and fellow trainees Kwon Ji-yong, TOP, Daesung, Seungri, and Hyun-seung were formed into the boy band Big Bang. Their creation was documented for TV, and after member Hyun-Seung was dropped, the remaining five member line-up released their debut, with Dong Young-bae adopting the stage name Taeyang. The group went on to become hugely successful in Asia, releasing eight studio albums, ten live albums, eight compilation albums, and seven singles albums, as well as countless singles and EPs.
Taeyang’s first solo single was My Girl, which featured on Big Bang’s 2006 debut album Big Bang Vol. 1. His first full-length solo album, Solar, came out in 2010 and became the first by an Asian artist to top the iTunes charts in North America. His second solo album, Rise, was released in 2014, and his third, White Night, in 2017. His most recent EP, Down to Earth, was released in 2023.
Taeyang regularly connects with his millions of followers and fans through Twitter, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram, posting pictures and comments about his life in entertainment. He also has a dedicated YouTube channel, TAEYANG.
